Lesson supplement basics. The "thumb and one-finger" right-hand picking approach used by guitarists like Merle Travis and Paul McCartney applied to the very common 1 5/7 6- 5/7 chord progression in the keys of C and G. The chords in those keys are C G/B Am G/B and G D/F# Em D/F#. These chord progressions are used in many songs, some examples are found in Fleetwood Mac's 'Landslide', which uses both progressions with a capo at the third fret, and Kansas' 'Dust in the Wind' which uses a variation of the progression in the key of C. These songs use a variation of another fingerpicking style commonly called "Travis picking" which is named after Merle Travis but usually utilizes the thumb and two fingers.
