I took a couple of friends on a very hot Sunday to one of my favorite water hikes in North Carolina. They wanted something with average distance and length, nothing too difficult like I normally do by myself. The Basin Creek Trail to Caudill Cabin in Doughton Park was a perfect solution. Since I was with my friends I only took a few short videos, and did not narrate. Some of you are probably thankful for the brevity this time around.

Doughton Park is the largest recreation area maintained by the Blue Ridge Parkway system and has a vast network of difficult trails through mostly isolated wilderness. The Basin Creek Trail is by far the easiest of the trails that originate from Longbottom Road. First we passed by enormous 100+ foot tall pines in Basin Cove. Then the trail crosses various streams 16 times while winding through many cabin remnants leftover from a disastrous flood in 1916. A quaint 15-foot waterfall is trailside near the turnaround point. The trail ends at Caudill Cabin, the lone standing house from the 1916 flood sitting in a cleared meadow 900 feet below Wildcat Rock off the Blue Ridge Parkway. On the way back we creek-walked to a larger waterfall inaccessible from the trail. It was a great hike, and I'm glad this time I got to check out the secluded lower waterfall on Basin Creek.

Hike distance was 11.0 miles in 5 hours and 20 minutes with 1,815 feet elevation gain.
