My Mom has been interested in computers for many years. She is in her 80s, but has been an emailer for probably close to a decade now. She hasn't used it for much other than that though. I was looking for a way to stay in closer touch and encouraged her to get on facebook so she could see photos I was putting up there. She was a little skeptical about facebook, but would try it. Over the phone I would try to counsel her through the steps of getting on to facebook and navigating through its pages once she was there, but it was pretty challenging for both of us.

Then I got a MacBook with a camera in it and we discovered the joys of Skype! It has changed our lives. Even though there is no telling how long either of us will be around, but as you grow older those opportunities to meaningfully connect with Loved Ones become more and more precious. Our visits on Skype have been such an incredibly different experience than staying in touch by phone, email, etc. Skype has also allowed me to be FAR more helpful in showing her how to do things on her computer. There is the ability for me to see on my screen, exactly what she is seeing on hers.
