Built in 1417 during the Ming Dynasty, it is where Mao Zedong proclaimed the People's Republic of China in 1949. Unlike the media images from the 1989 student demonstrations, today's Tiananmen Square is filled with throngs of people holding hands, rollerblading, and celebrating life.
