What is really "meta" in comp?

A lot of people blame the fact that "We don't play meta team comps" "we need 2 tanks" as the reason they lose games. I belive that this in "ranked" is very wrong. Yes playing something from the meta CAN give you a better chance but it is much better to play heros you are good at then to try to force a meta team comp.
