(10 Dec 2018) Mexico's foreign minister says his country will change its migratory policy to ensure migration is safe, orderly and regular.
Speaking at the Global Compact for Migration conference, Marcelo Ebrard said Mexico was "determined and convinced" to defend the migration agreement.
He further said his country will contribute more than 30 million US dollars over five years to a regional development program for the so-called Northern Triangle region of Central America, the source of the migrant caravans.
Ebrard also met with representatives from Honduras, Guatemala and El Salvador on on the sidelines of the UN migration conference and said that Mexico is committed to cooperating with his Central American counterparts.
He said the agreement by the four countries targets what drives migrants to leave their countries, their safety while in transit, their destination and what awaits them when they return.
