It's called a coronal mass ejection (CME) and is a massive burst of solar wind and magnetic fields rising above the solar corona or being released into space. This one happened Jan. 31, 2013. NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory captured this footage from 10 p.m. EST on Jan. 30, 2013, to 4 a.m. the next morning. In this video, the imaging cadence is one frame every 36 seconds.
