Sir Williams Walton's 'Scapino' Overture dates from 1941 and evokes the spirit of the 17th century Commedia dell'Arte. In this splendid performance, from the 1967 Proms in London's Royal Albert Hall, the London Philharmonic was conducted by Charles Groves (he was knighted in 1973.) It comes from a 2-CD 'CRQ Editions' set that pays tribute to Sir Charles and features other British works by Vaughan Williams, Delius and Robert Simpson, plus a Haydn symphony.
