No visit to Istanbul is complete without seeing the Spice Market and the Grand Bazaar. It's normal to negotiate and you can see me in action as I purchase some Turkish spices. The present structure of the Spice Market (also known as the Egyptian Bazaar or Market), was built by Harice Turhan Sultana as part of a foundation of Yeni mosque in 1660. It was last restored in 1943. Apart from six spice shops, the present market has lost its originality. The Grand Bazaar ranks #1 in the world among most visited tourist attractions, with over 90 million visitors. It was originally founded by Mehmet II in 1461 in order to provide traders with a safe and orderly place to conduct business. It's one of the oldest and largest covered markets in the world. It is well known for its jewelry, hand-painted ceramics, carpets, embroideries, spices, and antique shops. There are a total of 65 streets and 18 portals, eight of these are grand portals. The bazaar attracts between 250,000-400,000 daily visitors and has over 25,000 employees. Please SUBSCRIBE to Andy's Awesome Adventures and enable "All" on the Subscribe bell icon. Thank you!
