United Nations, New York, 22 June 2009 - B. Lynn Pascoe, the Under-Secretary for Political Affairs has today briefed the United Nations Security Council on the Central African Republic (CAR).

Reporting on a recent visit to the country, Mr Pascoe said that he was able to see for himself the impact of years of instability and insecurity. However, he also witnessed the "profound faith" that the Government and people of CAR had in the United Nations.

Mr Pascoe told the Security Council that the Secretary-General, Ban Ki-moon has urged authorities in the CAR to ensure elections are held on schedule in order to prevent a constitutional power vacuum which could be the source of further instability in the war-torn country. He also said that in the foreseeable future disarmanent of armed groups would also be a big challenge for the country.'
