Drivers may soon be going faster on one local highway.A bill to increase North Carolina's top speed limit from 70 to 75 is a step closer to becoming a law, after advancing to the state House.Legislators say the law would only effect straight, rural stretches of Interstate 40, which could include a chunk of the highway that cuts through McDowell County. It's currently the only stretch in Western North Carolina with a speed limit of 70.If they increase than of course people are gonna push it and say 'Well if the speed limit's 75, then maybe I can run 80 and not get stopped, said Highway Patrol Sergeant Kevin Owens, who patrols I-40 in McDowell County.Highway Patrol says the speed limit change would likely not have much impact on the number of accidents, but rather increase the severity of accidents along the roadway.By Ashlea SurlesFollow Ashlea on Twitter @AshleaSurles
