Ann Lee in conversation with Economist editor Matthew Bishop about her book, What the U.S. Can Learn from China: An Open-Minded Guide to Treating Our Greatest Competitor as Our Greatest Teacher. Ann Lee is a former Wall Street trading partner who felt repelled by the prevailing corruption as the bubble was growing and left Wall Street to enter academia, teaching in both the US and Chinese universities. She points to the Chinese subjecting applicants for party membership to difficult competency exams, then requiring each party member when assigned a leadership situation to submit plans for improving performance, and then keeping tract of their success in improving things according to their plans.
