Amb. KB Asante, Chief Civil Servant of African Affairs in the Nkrumah Gov't discussed Nelson Mandela's visit to Ghana in 1962 and the accusation of Mandela being snubbed by then Ghanaian President, Kwame Nkrumah. "He [Nkrumah] did not snub Mandela," said Amb. Asante, speaking from his home in Ghana. He went further to explain the Nkrumah administration's devotion to the efforts of Mandela. "In my view South Africa would not be where it is today if it wasn't for Mandela. I never expected to see a free South Africa during my lifetime," explained Amb. Asante. Although Amb. Asante acknowledged Mandela's mission for Africa, he also complains that the continent still has a long way to go."Africans are still of the bottom of the ladder even though they are free," said Amb. Asante." Most Africans have lost their self confidence. It was because of that self confidence that Mandela used to gain the majority rule in South Africa," he continued.
