Since the first use of the term "war on drugs" by Richard Nixon, the campaign to rid America of illegal substances has been a failure. Drug use has remained constant in the 40 years since the start of the war on drugs, and the only thing that seems to change is which drugs people are using at any given time. But there's a reason that this campaign has failed, and it has less to do with people wanting to get high, and everything to do with our failure to understand why people choose to use drugs. Air America's Sam Seder talks about this with Ryan Grim, author of the new book, This is Your Country on Drugs: The Secret History of Getting High in America.
