MSF has been in the west African country since December, responding to the violence that followed contested elections there. Over the past three months, as the dispute has deepened and pushed the nation to the brink of civil war, conditions for the population have gotten progressively worse. Insecurity due to the fighting in Abidjan, a city in the east with about 5 million residents, and around several towns in the west, combined with international sanctions on Ivory Coast have driven hundreds of thousands of people from their homes and severely hindered access to essential services—including health care.

In the West, MSF is providing primary healthcare in the towns of Man, Guiglo, Duékoué, Danané, Bin-Houyé and Bangolo, and supporting hospitals in that area. MSF teams in Abidjan are providing emergency medical services close to the fighting in a ministry of health hospital in the neighborhood of Abobo Sud. And in Liberia, teams are aiding refugees and residents with primary healthcare.
