I graduated lawschool, so my friend proposed to do a motorcycle tour for a few days as celebration. We started in Spokane, went up near Canada, and asked around with locals for any scenic roads that "your kids get carsick on." The original plan was to head up through canada, but some battery issues, and a forgotten passport changed those pans.

The bikes are a 1980 KZ680 F1, and a 2013 Suzuki TU250. Both are fun bikes and were suprisingly capable off road and on dirt roads. Even horsing around, I got about 52 MPG most of the time, and since speed was limited to around 65 (by the suzy) and we took back roads I even got 61.59 MPG one of the times I topped off. We packed for contingencies, so I had most of the tool kit an ADV guy would deem necessary, as well as a bit more camping gear than we used or planned to use. Extra kit in the way is the price of flexible planning. It was still a fairly light pack out and handled just fine. I've had a lot more stuff with me. I prefer to ride as lean and trim as I can.

It's also worth noting that the new Dyna S ignition system and coils are a big help. I can get away with lugging down to very low RPM without risk of stalling, and still pull even in a high gear. This makes smoothly laying down the power off road very easy to do. The bridgestone battlax bt45 tires also provide far more grip even on dirt than several other tires I have used on these. A bit more travel in the front forks and this would be a fairly capable adventure bike.
