(15 Dec 2018) After two weeks of bruising negotiations, officials from almost 200 countries agreed on Saturday on universal, transparent rules that will govern efforts to cut emissions and curb global warming.
Fierce disagreements on two other climate issues were kicked down the road for a year to help bridge a chasm of opinions on the best solutions.
Speaking to reporters after the vote German Environmental Minister Svenja Schulze said she was "very, very happy" about the outcome of the talks given the "very difficult" and "very technical" nature of the talks.
Greenpeace observer Jennifer Morgan was less enthusiastic about what she sees as a "lack of ambition".
"The fossil fuel countries here slowed things down," Morgan said, adding that the United States "did not help on the issue of having science move forward".
In the end, a decision on the mechanics of an emissions trading system was postponed to next year's meeting.
