(26 Nov 2018) Chinese and Indian officials reached some important points of consensus on boundary issues during weekend talks in Chengdu, the Chinese Foreign Ministry said on Monday. The 21st round of talks between Chinese and Indian special representatives on boundary issues was co-chaired by Chinese State Councillor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi and India's National Security Advisor Ajit Doval. "The two sides, so to speak, share common understandings in many fields," said Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman, Geng Shuang. Both sides agreed to continue working towards reaching solutions to the border question as soon as possible, said Geng. China also said on Monday it would continue to develop relations with both the EU and the UK, after EU leaders on Sunday approved an agreement on Britain's departure next year. "A prosperous, stable and open Europe and UK are in line with all sides' interests," said Geng. China also called on Russia and Ukraine to "keep restrained", after Russian coast guards opened fire on three Ukrainian ships near the Kerch Strait on Sunday, then seized them along with the crews. Ukraine said its vessels were heading to the Sea of Azov in line with international maritime rules, while Russia charged that they had failed to obtain permission to pass through the narrow Kerch Strait separating Crimea from the Russian mainland. In response to the complaint filed to UK regulators about Chinese state television's alleged involvement in a forced confession from a British citizen, Geng said Peter Humphrey, who submitted the complaint, "pleaded guilty in China". Peter Humphrey submitted the complaint against China Central Television (CCTV) and its international division, China Global Television, for violating British broadcasting rules. Humphrey and his wife spent two years in prison after being convicted of illegally acquiring personal information of Chinese citizens. The pair was shown separately on Chinese television purportedly confessing their crimes, but Humphrey said it was done under duress and that he was sedated. "We hope the British side will provide support and convenience for foreign media’s normal reporting in the UK," Geng said.
