The Ukraine, U.S.S.R in the 1960's. Soil of the 'Black Earth' region: strips of black soil against yellow corn. An old truck stands in front of a village in the same region. It is at a collective farm practising mixed farming. Women supervise cows feeding from a trough. Geese gobble beside a pond. Members own the collective farm: They gather round a central building till an 'expert' comes out to allocate work. Maize grows in the fields. A sunflower appears centre-screen in the full bloom - grown for its seeds and its oils. There are juicy red apples and a reddish crop called buckwheat, grown as cattle food. In a field peasant women in scarves shred sugar beet plants. Then a vast field of wheat appears under blue sky. Great quantities are grown for all Russia and Eastern Europe. Camera then tracks across lines of trees recently planted to provide wind breaks and prevent soil erosion.
