Scales are the building blocks of music much like an alphabet is essential to the study of a language. Understanding scales is the first step to understanding how music works in general and is essential to zooming in and analyzing everything from a simple piece of music to a sympnohy.

We also talk a little bit about modes today. The Dorian, Phrygian, Lydian, Mixolydian, and Aeolian modes are also part of musical study. We don't talk in-depth about the modes today but just touch on them.
