We scrambled via the "Cascadian Couloir", the only "non-technical" route up this imposing 5000 foot tall tooth-shaped mass of fractured granite. The "North Ridge" route is a classic rock climb, up a 2500 foot buttress, right off the summit. The summit of Mount Stuart is 9,415 feet and the elevation of the trail head is 4260 feet. Thus there is a net trail-head-to-summit elevation gain of 5,155 feet. However, because the trip involves a significant amount of elevation loss on the approach, the total round-trip elevation gain is some 3000 feet more, well over 8000 feet. Needless to say it was exhausting, even when spread out over three days. My father took the heavier pack in on the first day while I took more weight on the second and third days.
