Raising your own food on a large scale can be discouraging and rewarding; frustrating and fulfilling; or a lot of work and a great way to get sunshine and exercise, depending on how the year goes. Farming and raising crops has never been an exact science and that discourages a lot of people from diving into it, as we discuss in this video. I speak with "Farm Dan", a guy I've known since high school, who has made his living raising and selling food at Fassnight Creek Farms, right in the middle of Springfield, Missouri. If you're ever in the area and catch the KY-3 noon news you might see Dan, he does a gardening segment once a week. He's preparing for the busy season and took time to discuss what to expect when you're first getting started in raising your own food. I've been around gardening enough to know that every year is different, there's no guarantee of success, and there's always a possibility of total failure. But, when everything works, raising your own food is a healthy activity, both from the labor that you put into it, and from consuming produce that you've tended with care and you know is safe to eat. So get out there and plant the garden! It won't always be successful, but the more you do it the more chances of raising a great crop you'll have. There's something greatly therapeutic about digging in the dirt!
