(KUTV) The Super Bowl is America€™s second biggest food consumption day of the year, behind only Thanksgiving. American€™s will eat 2.5 million pounds of nuts, 11.2 million pounds of potato chips and over a billion chicken wings. The Super Bowl also anchors a large national youth based food drive, the Souper Bowl of Caring. Schools and church youth groups across the country ask people to donate a dollar or a can of food from their Super Bowl party budget to fight hunger and poverty. In Utah schools participate from Roosevelt, to Hurricane to Ogden raising money and collecting food for the Utah Food Bank, Catholic Community Services and The Road Home, Utah€™s largest homeless shelter. Each group sends 100% of their donations to their favorite charity. They can be around the corner or around the world. According to the Souper Bowl website, www.souperbowl.org the drive has raised an average of about 10 million dollars in cash and in kind contributions for five consecutive years. So far in 2013 Utah€™s youth have raised over $50,000 in cash and food donations. The website crashed Sunday so the total maybe even higher.
