(KUTV) Utah has some of the most relaxed gun laws in the nation -- and if the federal government pursues gun control legislation, they will likely run into fierce opposition by some Utahns. Lawmakers have seemed opened to change in recent discussion -- however there are still others who oppose gun control. Representative Curtis Oda is a well-known gun activist and concealed carry instructor. Oda carries his gun even when he is at work in the capital building. "Gun free zone is a kill zone, only one they're protecting is the criminal," said Oda. Oda was one of several people featured in the latest issue of Salt Lake magazine which will hit shelves January 1. Executive Editor of the magazine, Mary Brown Malouf, spent months researching why Utahns are so consumed with guns. Malouf believes Utahns have an "us vs, them" mentality when it comes to the Federal Government. In her article, Malouf says Utah is perhaps the most armed state in the nation -- while some studies show it is also among the most peaceful. But, despite Malouf's vast research on the subject, she is not convinced the citizens should be permitted to own assault weapons and sniper rifles. Both Malouf and Oda agree that something needs to be done to avoid another tragedy like the shooting that took place in Newtown, Connecticut last week -- and say it starts with taking a look at mental health before altering gun laws.KSL Classifieds said Tuesday they will temporarily suspend the sale of firearms on their website.
