In Mammoth Hot Springs the magnificent travertine plateaus can be found which have been left behind by the water. Visitors to the park can meet elk practically everywhere. High up in the mountains of the park we find the bighorn sheep. Their ideal habitat is located on the north side of the park. Food and safety are important to them. Here they can easily escape their enemies, which include wolves, coyotes and bears. The pronghorn can be found on the prairies. In Yellowstone the bucks are, as it were, living on a biological island. Other herds from outside the park cannot reach them. The unique herd in the park consists of some 500 animals. The males and females can easily be distinguished. The horns of the males grow beyond their ears, those of the females do not. The males are also larger and have black hair in and around their neck. Yelowstone National Park is officially designated by UNESCO as World Heritage Site, and has to be safeguarded for the future as a testimony to its enduring past.
