Simply put, Barry Sanders is Oklahoma State's most-decorated football player and perhaps the finest running back to have ever played the game on the college and professional levels.

Sanders played three years for the Cowboys, and his 1988 Heisman Trophy season set new standards for all subsequent running backs to be judged. In 1988, Sanders rushed for 2,628 yards and scored 37 rushing touchdowns. Sanders owns five of OSU's top all-time single game rushing bests, including the only four 300-yard games in OSU history. He owns 34 NCAA records and had 14 Big Eight Conference records placed into the league's final record book before it merged with the Southwest Conference to become the Big 12. In addition to the Heisman Trophy, Sanders won the Maxwell Award and National Player of the Year - as well as being a two-time All-American selection.

Sanders was drafted by the Detroit Lions in the first round of the 1989 NFL Draft, where he played until his retirement in 1999. Sanders was a 10-time Pro Bowl Selection, a 6-time First-Team All-Pro, 1997 NFL MVP, and holds 10 franchise records. Sanders has been inducted into both the College Football and Pro Football Halls of Fame.
