Leticia Trujillo is living a dream. As a first generation American, she is the first person in her family to attend college. Biola for her is much more than a college education; it is the opportunity to pave a better life for her family, she said. "Ever since I was a child, I wanted to go to college," said Leticia. "My parents didn't have the opportunity for a better life. I think that's what kept my motivation strong." Leticia came to know Christ in junior high, giving her life to him at a local church youth group. Allowing the Lord to carry her through struggles she had at the time, she developed a strong trust in him, she said. "After I accepted him into my life, my struggles didn't end," she said. "There was a lot against me, but he was the only solution - he stuck with me." As she became more involved in her church youth group, she desired to know God more. When she discovered that Christian colleges existed, Leticia knew that was the type of education she wanted. "Biola ended up being my top choice," said Leticia. "I could really see there was a good vibe here - people wanted to integrate both education and God." Leticia wants to set an example for her younger siblings and church community, where the majority of the congregation has not attended college, and she sees Biola and higher education as setting a higher standard for herself and her family. She wants to show others they have the ability to accomplish their own goals. "You can encourage others through words," she said. "But I want to be that higher standard and example so others can see how they can set themselves up to accomplish their dreams." Now as a business major, she is taking her theory of setting a higher standard into her future career. Leticia hopes to work in management so she can lead and help others improve in their own skills. Taking pride in her heritage - her mother is from Mexico and her father is from Guatemala - Leticia calls her life exciting and a privilege. Sitting in a classroom at Biola is something she has worked hard for. With money coming together at the last minute, she wasn't sure if she would be able to achieve her dream. Now, she is only grateful. "I'm happy to tell my parents that all their hard work paid off and I'm willing to improve and bless them back," she said. "God gave me this miracle and I'm very grateful to be here. I need to be here and want to be here."
