The Medium Term budget policy statement has come and gone leaving in its wake, dissatisfaction in many. Value Added Tax still remains at 15 percent with a couple of items included in the list of zero-rated products. The most welcome being the zero rate on sanitary pads. Petrol remains the main driver of inflation and the toll roads are back on the table. With Finance Minister Tito Mboweni emphatically calling for compliance. The Unions are generally unhappy about the economy shedding jobs. Specifically, the public sector is looking at measures that will reduce the cost of salaries in government. Currently, salaries in the public sector spend 80 percent of their budget on salaries. But Mboweni was cautious about retrenchments.
