(20 Nov 2018) Kremlin critic Mikhail Khodorkovsky said on Tuesday he was "seriously worried" by the prospect of a top Russian police official being named as president of Interpol. Alexander Prokopchuk, a general in the Russian Interior Ministry, is the front-runner to become Interpol's next president. Khodorkovsky said that, if Prokopchuk is chosen to lead the agency "he will be ready to take absolutely any action at the Kremlin's command, because reputation is not something he's worried about." Khodorkovsky spoke in a joint press conference with financier William Browder on Tuesday in London. Khodorkovsky also commented on accusations made on Monday against Browder by the Russian General Prosecutor's office. Russian prosecutors announced a new criminal case against Browder, raising the pressure on him before European Union discussions about a set of sanctions he is advocating. The new charges leveled against Browder accuse him of forming a criminal group to embezzle funds in Russia. They also alleged that he could be behind the death of his employee, Sergei Magnitsky, in a Russian prison. Browder mounted an international campaign to bring Magnitsky's killers to justice, and in 2012, the U.S. Congress passed the Magnitsky Act that imposed travel and financial sanctions on top Russian officials, including prosecutors. Several other countries have since adopted similar legislation.
