The second hike was originally planned to be Mt. Ellinor in the Olympic Mountains. We reached the trail head early in the day only to find that it was now off limits due to an incident of a mountain goat acting aggressive towards hikers. We instead did a long 16 mile round trip hike up to the base of "The Brothers" and back. The "Valley of the Silent Men" contains some beautiful lush scenery with all kinds of moss, ferns, and primeval-looking old-growth forest.

The snow slope below the Muir snowfield on Mount Rainier proved to be an excellent spot for practicing placing snow picket protection and ice-axe self-arrest. The only issue was the sun which burned me to a crisp. It's really easy to underestimate the amount of UV exposure you get from the snow in full sun. I'd say the snow magnifies the damage by at least a factor of two and you have to worry about vulnerable fair skin in places such as the underside of your lips, nose, chin, and neck, bottoms of your ears, inside portions of your forceps, biceps, and wrists, etc... getting exposed to the reflected UV.
