China's reform and opening-up over the past four decades has brought changes at a dizzying speed. But thanks to the works of photographer like Liu Heung Shing, the Chinese can still gauge where everything started. Chinese-American Liu was the only Western photographer based in China when he arrived in 1977. Instead of focusing on the grand schemes like his Chinese counterparts did then, he was fascinated by the real lives of the Chinese and captured this with his photography.
