10 songs by one of Great Britain's greatest singer-songwriters of the 21st century! All songs written and owned by Frank Turner. SEE EXPLANATIONS BELOW:

# 10

Released in 2018, Frank’s seventh album combines punk and folk rock with emotional and political lyrics and “1933” is no exception. This angry track primarily focuses on the Nazis, who just controlled Germany and how the singer was aware about mentioning them and comparing that year to 2016, when Frank wrote it during his tour in the United States.

OPINION: The reason I put this song at the bottom was because of the first verse. I felt discouraged when he sang this:

“‘Stop asking musicians what they think’
He said softly as he poured himself a second drink
And outside, the world slipped over the brink”

At first, it was misunderstanding, but then I realized that Frank meant to say it sarcastically.

You want to dance? Then, this is the song. “Four Simple Words” is a blend of vaudeville and hard punk rock. According to Frank, “It kind of feels like Queen to me.” Either way, it’s punk rock that’s fun to dance with.

OPINION: “Four Simple Words” does not have the exact four words that I would think. I, on one hand, admit the fact that it’s a dancing song, but on the other, don’t dance to it. Why? Because of the title.

# 8

Criticized negatively, but praised positively, Frank’s sixth album had many critical ups and downs after it was released in 2015. “Glorious You” talks about a girl who is one of Frank’s friends who has been going through a lot of things. He convinces her to “lift up the weight of the world from your shoulders”.

OPINION: No hard feelings, but the studio version, respectfully, has to be better than the acoustic. For just a bit, I feel exactly like that girl in the song every time I hear it. Even though my family loves this song, as much as the fans, I underrate it for its extremely convincing and glorious upbeat.

# 7

From his fourth album, released in 2011, “If Ever I Stray” shares a great deal about feeling good, because people love us and we must be proud for what we haven’t taken for granted. It also is one of his very recognizably fast punk rock songs throughout his musical career.

OPINION: Basically, “If Ever I Stray” is a really wonderful song. There is no doubt that the emotional lyrics and Frank’s vocals blend together to make it sound so loving. Because of this song, I keep learning to feel proud of who I am, whenever I listen to it.

# 6

That’s right! This is the album’s top single, but also Frank’s ninth. Featured on the 2012 Summer Olympics in London and written on tour in China, “I Still Believe” shows the singer’s atheistic point of view toward his love for rock & roll, including its cultural aspects, debate on religion, and how much we powerfully enjoy this kind of music for all time.

OPINION: It may be surprising that “I Still Believe” is not on the top 5, due to the singer’s belief system. There is nothing else to say, except I like the rock & roll style Frank put in.

# 5

“‘The Next Storm’ is an image for the whole record, really. Emerging from a storm shelter to find that, while the tornado destroyed the town, you and your family survived, the sun is out, and you can start rebuilding.” That was Frank’s explanation of this first single from “Positive Songs For Negative People”. Although it started with storm metaphors, Frank decided to move on after taking great pleasure with Tape Deck Heart.

OPINION: Like “If Ever I Stray”, this is an absolutely positive song, except it helps me to keep moving forward. If I look into the past or not let go of what is in my mind, I learn to change and wait for “The Next Storm”.

# 4

This is a heavily sad story about Frank and his old girlfriend who used to live together. After Frank left, he broke some keys from a piano that they kept before. He thought for a long time about his girlfriend when he found the piano and played some sad songs. Because Frank was gone for some reason, she did not join in harmony.

OPINION: The most melancholy song I ever heard by Frank must be considered one of the best. It’s original, essential, and influential for a sad piano story. I also like each of the five notes that were played at the very end. It sounds as if the Terminator would brake a piano easily.
