2006 was a black-red-gold summer spectacular, when the whole of Germany donned the national colours for the World Cup. Germans showed the flag in a way that they hadn't done for decades. An exhibition in Bonn's 'Haus der Geschichte' museum examines Germans' attitudes, past and present, to symbols like flags, anthems and eagles. President Horst Köhler opened the exhibition: "Flagge Zeigen", 'Showing the Flag'. We try to explain why Germans still have problems with their national symbols.
