Spicer raccoon lives! We've not seen this darling boy since October of 2015. Back then he was buddied up with Pinky (a very tame sweet older male raccoon) for awhile and then that was the last we ever saw of both. When Spicer recently returned, he had a couple young male companions tagging along. They were quite wary of him having no concerns whatsoever being so close to a human. However they watched our interaction with deep curiosity and looked puzzled as to why he was offering some high-fives and a few other behaviours (aka tricks). These were taught so we could treat his past injuries. The power of positive reinforcement training is never forgotten which Spicer proves. We've not seen him return since this footage so we hope wherever his adventures take him he will continue to thrive successfully and surprise us again in the future. A lifespan for a wild raccoon is short. If they can survive past the first three years, their odds increase. Unfortunately most wild raccoons still will live a short life due to the inherent dangers that's always around them - getting hit by cars, people trapping, shooting, fights with other wild animals, etc. Spicer has been badly injured several times and each time he has surprised us and beaten the odds. NOTE: Our rescue raccoons resides in a region where there hasn't been a case of raccoon rabies for over three decades which is tracked by the local public health department. We are fortunate to be able to observe and professional work with a variety of wildlife species since we reside next to a protected wildlife preserve. Our rescue raccoons lounge and play on our terrace as well as use it as a thoroughfare. No children nor pets are ever harmed, especially the wild animals captured in these videos.
