South African Afro-rock group whose name means “Lone Wanderer”. They started off as The Beaters in 1965 with Selby Ntuli on guitar, keyboards and flute and Saitana on guitar. In 1976 they changed their name to Harari. Members over the years included: Sipho Mabuse (drums – joined in 1968 and went solo in 1984), Alec “Om” Khaoli (bass), Oupa Segwai (percussion), Thelma “Neo” Segonah (keyboards – joined in 1978 from The Minerals), Masike “Funky” Mohape (lead guitar), Eddie Manda (guitar), Charlie Ndlovu (keyboards – was with The Black Hawks and The Minerals previously), Branny Ledwaba (percussion – was in the original cast of Ipi Tombi, and previously with the Zulu Spirits), Lionel Petersen (vocals – joined in 1981 after a successful solo career, although he was with The Beaters in the late 1960s), Condry Zigubu (guitar – previously with the Flaming Souls), Jimmy Mngwande (bass, vocals, joined in 1984), Sello Twala (percussion, vocals – joined in 1984), Enos Lubisi (keyboards, vocals – joined in 1984), Masike Mohape (guitar, vocals – rejoined in 1984).

Through the years Harari supported many international acts on their tours of South Africa, including Percy Sledge, Timmy Thomas, Brook Benton, Wilson Pickett and Letta Mbulu. In 1980 they were featured on a BBC-TV documentary, and in 1981 were signed by A&M Records in the USA. Their single, Party, entered the US Disco Top 100 in 1982.
