Georg Philipp Telemann (1681 - 1767):
DANISH CANTATA (movement no. 8 to 12)

"De Danske, Norske og Tydske Undersaatters Glæde"

("The joy of the King of Denmark's Danish, Norwegian and German Subjects")

In 1757, Telemann was commissioned to compose this cantata for the birthday of the Danish King Frederick V, which was celebrated in the Christianeum school in Altona (near Hamburg) on March 31, 1757. The text, which contains sections in Danish, German and Latin, was provided by Salomon Von Haven, who was clergyman in The church of Our Lady in Odense, Denmark.

At that time, Telemann was living in Hamburg. He was in charge of the music for the five principal churches and as the musical director of the city also had to write music for special occations, such as installation of new clergymen, annual celebrations of the citizen captains, chamber of commerce etc. He also composed music for private or family celebrations of the business class and nobility, concerts that he himself organized, and private commisions from friends or persons who had some connection with him. He was also in charge of the Hamburg Gänsemarkt Opera, and provided compositions on a regular basis for the court in Eisenach and for the Markgraves of Bayreuth.

Telemann was always open to new ideas from younger generations of musicians, and during the last ten years of his life he wrote a series of quite outstanding compositions reflecting an astonishing talent for melodic invention. The present cantata can surely be numbered among these works.

The cantata was printed in Hamburg in 1757. The music score which is presented in this video originates from this edition.

8. Recitativo:
Yea Sire! Happy you are yourself because with you we are made happy too. And Denmark, your happiness is great because you are ruled by one who himself would be ruled by God in Heaven! Therefore thank God always, the Lord of Hosts, for you have not deserved so well, and therefore your equal is not found on earth; your good fortune is deserving of envy.

9. Coro:
Our time is blessed, and God has heard our prayer for our dear king, and God is his sure reward. Grant peace, great God, in the lands and realms of kings; send likewise now your word to all who war on one another's countries; say they must cease, for war is not your will but only the price of sin.

10. Recitativo:
Listen, all you who now are present here: Happy are the men of Denmark, of Norway, of Germany, who take pleasure in their king! And therefore the Most High God lifts up their hearts on their king's birthday, and they will have won their case if they can live in wisdom, piety and chastity.

11. Aria:
Here was never greater joy than when Louise full of virtue came in to us with laughter. As long as the fruit and offspring of her good self and Maria are here, we judge ourselves blessed with happiness. And if men ask: "How do you dare call yourselves blessed in Queen Juliana and the most virtuous Louise?"

12. Coro:
Then answer: "Because those two won the heart of the king: and God will always dwell in him, God who took our pain upon himself. May God make him happy, and all his folk who shall be mighty in virtue and victorious on land and at sea! That is our prayer, our joy."
