Georg Philipp Telemann (1681 - 1767):
DANISH CANTATA (movement no. 18 to 20)
"De Danske, Norske og Tydske Undersaatters Glæde"
("The joy of the King of Denmark's Danish, Norwegian and German Subjects")
In 1757, Telemann was commissioned to compose this cantata for the birthday of the Danish King Frederick V, which was celebrated in the Christianeum school in Altona (near Hamburg) on March 31, 1757. The text, which contains sections in Danish, German and Latin, was provided by Salomon Von Haven, who was clergyman in The church of Our Lady in Odense, Denmark.
At that time, Telemann was living in Hamburg. He was in charge of the music for the five principal churches and as the musical director of the city also had to write music for special occations, such as installation of new clergymen, annual celebrations of the citizen captains, chamber of commerce etc. He also composed music for private or family celebrations of the business class and nobility, concerts that he himself organized, and private commisions from friends or persons who had some connection with him. He was also in charge of the Hamburg Gänsemarkt Opera, and provided compositions on a regular basis for the court in Eisenach and for the Markgraves of Bayreuth.
Telemann was always open to new ideas from younger generations of musicians, and during the last ten years of his life he wrote a series of quite outstanding compositions reflecting an astonishing talent for melodic invention. The present cantata can surely be numbered among these works.
The cantata was printed in Hamburg in 1757. The music score which is presented in this video originates from this edition.
18. Coro:
O, how happy is the day which God, the Almighty Father, himself made happiest for the Northern world of Denmark with Norway, Holstein and Oldenburg, granting the realm as a divine image the best king, and to that king a most fertile marriage bed, and to that marriage bed the fairest offspring.
19. Duetto:
O, how welcome will it not be, that grace of the thrice best God, if the years of our king, as we fervently pray, shall be as many as Nestor's! Long live the whole royal household! Let our fleet and army flourish everywhere on land and sea, and let every king's man, Dane, Norwegian or German, be famed both in war and at peace. O, how holy is the joy with which we offer our united prayer!
20. Coro:
May the unwavering piety, the pious justice and the prudent constancy of our most merciful king endure together with his generosity! Amen in the name of Jesus Christ; trusting in him I shall never be confounded.
