INTERVIEW: Kenya's electricity costs to fall

Electricity consumers in Kenya paid between 17% to 26% more for their electricity in the month of April. This is despite heavy rain and floods in some parts of the East African nation. Following 2017's extreme drought, the country relied on more expensive thermal power sources, and geothermal power plants, to plug the shortfall in supply from her dams. Thermal sources accounted for over 21% of electricity generated in Kenya in the 2016/17 fiscal year, a 4-year high. However, the CEO of Kenya Power, the country's biggest power distribution firm, says now that the country's biggest reservoir is nearly full, a lot less thermal power will be needed.
