Ombud for Life Insurance rule in favor of Momentum: Jennifer Preiss

Life Insurer Momentum has been criticized after refusing a settlement claim of 2.4m Rand for life cover for Nathan Gana who was killed in a hail of bullets during a botched hijacking at his home in Durban in 2014. He died whilst protecting his wife and child. The company says Gana did not disclose a pre-exisitng condition of raised blood sugar levels and was therefore not entitled to the cover he was claiming for. It says they would not have offered him the cover in the first place. After sustained criticism the company says it will pay back his premiums and not demand the 50-thousand rand cash benefit it had initially demanded from the family used to pay for his funeral. The Ombud for Life Insurance has examined the case and ruled in favor of the company.
