Family honors centuries-old pledge

On Saturday, three generations of the Griswold family gathered in an Old Saybrook cemetery to honor a pledge made more than 350 years ago. According to the family?s oral history, in 1645 Matthew Griswold promised a grieving husband he would care for the grave of his wife, Lady Fenwick, who had died in childbirth. In exchange, Griwsold would receive several hundred acres of land in Old Lyme.
