On June 15, 2006, The Fast and the Furious Extreme Close-Up was launched, offering a captivating behind-the-scenes glimpse of a thrilling special-effects sequence from a high-octane action film. Get ready to experience Stage 55!

As the tram enters the outdoor Stage 55 at Universal Studios Hollywood, the stunt demonstration begins. An overhead helicopter fires at the cars, creating a spray of water to simulate bullet impacts on the pavement. Suddenly, a stray bullet strikes a gas tank, resulting in a massive explosion that propels the cars toward the tram.

During the initial months of operation, adjustments are made to enhance the attraction. Instead of explaining the complex concept of "pre-visualization," the studio tour guides now hand over to a "stunt director" who guides guests through a rehearsal and a take.

An exhilarating addition to the Studio Tour is a visually stunning chase sequence inspired by the highly anticipated film "Fast and Furious: Tokyo Drift." Utilizing advanced robotics and cutting-edge computer-generated previsualization technology, this new tram experience thrusts guests into the heart-pounding world of drift street racing, bringing them up close and personal to the intense action.

Guests will be captivated by an explosive display as two drift-racing vehicles, attached to massive robotic arms, careen out of control and approach the Studio Tour trams at speeds of up to 45 mph. Upon impact, the cars explode in a spectacular plume of fire and smoke, enveloping the 10,000 sq ft. outdoor arena in a stunning visual spectacle.

The specially rigged cars, weighing only 500 lbs each, have been stripped down and modified to execute the precise and breathtakingly orchestrated movements required for this incredible experience.

The grand finale of the attraction showcases a skillful "automotive dance demonstration," featuring intricate programming set to a lively hip-hop beat, all enabled by a groundbreaking motion-control simulation system.

History:
Construction of The Fast and the Furious attraction began in March 2006, and it officially opened on June 15, 2006. The location previously housed a model used in Dante's Peak. The area before the attraction, now called the Transportation Department, was formerly the Greens Department, which featured foam-rubber trees. These trees can now be found in the Jurassic Park area. The actual Transportation Department is situated elsewhere on the backlot, next to the Prop Warehouse beyond the Square of Warriors.

The computer-controlled robotic arms featured in the attraction underwent extensive testing, including final testing in the cinema surface parking lot below the Curious George parking structure.

Closure:
As of July 2013, this stop on the tram tour has closed indefinitely. Rumors suggest objections to the attraction were raised by the team behind the Fast & Furious movies. The reason for these objections not surfacing during the initial planning phase remains unknown."
