Back to the Future Original Soundtrack Gold Record Warner Pioneer Japan This listing was for a highly rare original gold record presented by Warner Pioneer Corporation in Japan, recognizing MCA Records for a “Superlative Album” honoring the original Back to the Future motion picture soundtrack in 1987. The gold record originated with MCA Records and was issued directly from Universal City. A close friend of mine previously worked for Universal Records in the early 1990s. When a senior music executive departed the company from the Black Tower on the Universal Studios lot, several gold records were gifted to staff members as part of her departure. My friend was among those recipients and retained this piece for decades before deciding to part with it, which led to this eBay sale. Multiple photographs were taken at the time of listing to document the item from all angles. As shown in the images, the frame exhibited visible wear and damage. The buyer received exactly what was pictured. Due to its provenance, presentation, and limited nature, this piece is considered exceptionally rare and effectively one of a kind. It resided at MCA Records in Universal City for many years, adding to its authenticity and historical significance. Back to the Future is a 1985 American science fiction film directed by Robert Zemeckis and written by Zemeckis and Bob Gale. The film stars Michael J. Fox, Christopher Lloyd, Lea Thompson, Crispin Glover, and Thomas F. Wilson. Set in 1985, the story follows teenager Marty McFly, who is accidentally sent back to 1955 in a time-traveling DeLorean created by his eccentric friend, Dr. Emmett “Doc” Brown. While trapped in the past, Marty disrupts his parents’ first meeting and must repair the timeline before he can return to the future. The project was conceived in 1980 but was rejected by studios more than 40 times for not aligning with the prevailing comedy trends of the era. Development moved forward after Zemeckis’ success with Romancing the Stone in 1984. Although Michael J. Fox was always the first choice for the role of Marty McFly, scheduling conflicts initially led to Eric Stoltz being cast in the role. After filming began, the decision was made to replace Stoltz with Fox, resulting in reshoots and an increased budget. Filming took place throughout California and on the Universal Studios lot, concluding in April 1985. Despite production delays, strong test screenings prompted the studio to move the release date forward to July 3, 1985. The film went on to become a major critical and commercial success, earning $381.1 million worldwide and becoming the highest-grossing film of 1985. It received widespread acclaim for its storytelling, performances, and humor, and won numerous awards, including an Academy Award, Saturn Awards, and a Hugo Award. The theme song, The Power of Love by Huey Lewis and the News, became a global hit. Over time, Back to the Future has come to be regarded as one of the greatest films of the 1980s and one of the most influential science fiction films of all time. In 2007, it was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry. The film spawned two sequels released in 1989 and 1990 and launched a lasting multimedia franchise spanning television, video games, books, merchandise, collectibles, theme park attractions, and a stage musical that debuted in 2020. This sold item represented a unique intersection of film history, music industry recognition, and Universal Studios legacy. It measures approximately 17" x 19 3/4" x 1".
