Please visit us at: http://botanyboy.org/ Traditional Japanese cuisine often involves foraging for edible wild plants, and in today’s video we are seeking out the new shoots of Aralia elata for a tempura fry. In this video you will see how the shoots are collected, prepared and then fried in batter along with shrimp, squid and shimeji mushrooms. I also show you look alike plants that should be avoided, in particular poison sumac. At the end of the video my wife and I go for a walk in a nearby park and find lots of insects, flowering iris, and one tiny orchid, Cephalanthera erecta.
