Pulmonary rehabilitation uses endurance and strength training to help patients improve their breathing, heart health, muscle tone and overall quality of life. As explained by Philip Diaz, MD, a pulmonologist at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center, rehab typically lasts eight to 10 weeks with patients attending one and a half to two-hour sessions three times a week. Specialists involved in the process include respiratory therapists, nurses, physical therapists and exercise physiologists. Dr. Diaz has seen patients who start rehab in a wheelchair progress to walking 30 minutes on a treadmill.
