Make sure that you have more than enough information in your construction contract, before signing it. Just because your contractor tells you that he's going to do something, doesn't mean that it's going to happen. If it's in writing, you have something to bargain with, just in case there ever was a problem. There are plenty of honest contractors out there working hard in the construction industry, but it's the dishonest ones that create problems for homeowners as well as other contractors.
