Episode 11! This is probably the hardest decision to make in all of the Mass Effect games other than the ending. The consequences are dire unless you played the game in a way that got you the optimal choice. I know many of you have played this game before, but nonetheless for those of you who haven't, here is our reasoning behind the big choice we made in this episode....

SPOILER ALERT:

What makes you alive? Are the Geth living beings even though they are not organic? Do they have souls? This is the crucial question that not only drives the ultimate decision we made here, but it's also the question that sparked the entire Quarian and Geth war. The Quarians created the Geth, and when the Geth became advanced to the point where one of them asked their master, "Do I have a soul?" It scared the Quarians into destroying the Geth. Only the Geth were no longer just machines absent of thoughts or survival instinct. They were sentient life forms and they choose to take up arms and defend themselves.

Flash forward to this moment in the story, where Shepard is forced to choose between the Geth and the Quarians. Who "deserves" to live? We played it both ways, and decided that for the video we would choose the Geth over the Quarians. At the end of the day, it was the Quarians who created the Geth to be machine slaves, and it was the Quarians who decided they needed to destroy the Geth out of fear, even though the Geth had not shown aggression. Even at this final moment, Legion emphasizes the fact that the Geth did everything out of self-defense and survival. They could have easily and completely destroyed the Quarians during the first war, but out of respect for their former masters, they decided to let them escape. The Quarians became nomads with no home and roamed the galaxy as the "Migrant Fleet."

It is my belief that the Geth are indeed "alive" and that they deserve life as much as any other organic lifeforms. Their destruction is not the same as throwing out the trash. It is equivalent to genocide. That being said, the Quarian's fear of sentient life is understandable but that still doesn't make it right for them to destroy the Geth. What really hurts in this decision, is Tali's fate. For the player, her suicide is heartbreaking. She was a true friend and companion to Shepard. And if you chose so, even your lover. But she, like the Quarians, were in control of their fate. They had the choice to stop their assault. Her pain is understandable, but she chose her fate as well.

I'm not sure how other people made their choice in this situation. If we knew Tali's fate beforehand, I honestly might have reconsidered. Again, the optimal choice is to make peace between the two races, but we needed to have specific missions and outcomes from Mass Effect 2 and 3, and we also needed to have the right reputation. So we were forced to choose. We actually did do the second option, and pondered which one we should use for the video. That video is linked above if you want to watch what happens if you choose the Quarians over the Geth.

As always, we used relevant gameplay, important dialogue and all cutscenes to create one cinematic experience. Enjoy!
