The Writers' Strike was in its 16th week here. Late Night's last new show had aired in early March 1988. In Week 10, on May 11, Johnny Carson had received a waiver to air new Tonight Shows but without his writers. Dave received his own waiver over a month later, and so, without his writing staff, he was allowed to create new Late Nights beginning on Tuesday, June 28. (The strike ended seven weeks later.) Three days earlier, he appeared on network television for the first time since that early March on Marv Albert's pre-game "An Inside Look" segment on "Saturday Game of the Week." Here's that segment, with Dave interviewing New York Mets pitcher David Cone, taped earlier in the week.
