ACC President and Mayo Clinic cardiologist David R. Holmes, M.D., previews the upcoming Annual Scientific Session & Expo, held in Chicago from March 24-27, 2012. Among the items of "incredible interest" that Dr. Holmes mentions are: -Maintenance of Certification and the increasing focus on lifelong learning. - The initial introduction of "Just-in-Time" learning technology, which allows physicians to rapidly scan lengthy treatment and diagnosis guidelines to help determine optimal approaches more quickly. - Late-Breaking Clinical Trials, which discuss the "latest and greatest" in the field of cardiology and will cover the broad range of topics, including heart failure, stem cells, PCI, new drugs, epidemiology, and imaging. While the findings of the 18 scheduled Late-Breaking Clinical Trials won't be known until they are presented at the conference, Dr. Holmes identifies some of the "incredibly important issues to be addressed" as: - Comparative effectiveness of patients with angina undergoing coronary revascularization - The use of stem cells - How to mechanically restore flow using the catheterization laboratory - Elective PCI in the setting of non-surgical backup - How do we select lipids and lipid lowering drugs to optimize long-term outcomes?
