Police seized one tonne of syabu worth RM54 million in a raid at a store in Jelutong, Pulau Pinang on Friday, the largest drugs haul in the country's history. A 47-year-old lorry driver was also remanded for seven days to assist in the investigation. Bukit Aman Narcotics Crime Investigation Department director, Datuk Seri Mohmad Salleh said the narcotics were discovered in a lorry during the 4pm raid. The authorities believe the drugs were brought in from a neighbouring country and they were for export by a syndicate. Pulau Pinang with plentiful land, sea and air routes serves as a drug trafficking and distribution hub, before the drugs are sent elsewhere. Last month, police crippled two syndicates in the island state and seized synthetic drugs worth RM34.5 million. (Soundbite of Datuk Seri Mohmad Salleh / Bukit Aman Narcotics Crime Investigation Dept. Director Subtitle: Assuming that a drug addict consumes 0.2 grams of syabu at a time, the seized drugs can be used by 5.3 million addicts, which is a huge number.)
