The rats have a highly developed sense of smell and are too light to detonate landmines, making them ideal candidates to clear former minefields in Africa. The rats can clear an area of 100 square meters in 30 minutes at around half the cost of conventional clearing methods. They are also being used in tests to detect tuberculosis.
